The Daring Book for Girls (Hardcover)

The Daring Book for Girls

From Publishers Weekly

Kadushin, whose lush voice brought the heroine of Stephenie Meyers’s Twilight series to life, does her best to inject some intrigue and mystery into this mile-wide, inch-deep compendium of random facts billed as a manual for everything that girls need to know, a selection from the bestselling book. Alas, the audio version, replete with time lines, 14 variations of how to play tag and sesquipedalian vocabulary words, sorely lacks dynamism. The brief historie (more…)

Going Rogue: An American Life (Hardcover)

Going Rogue: An American Life

From The Washington Post

From The Washington Post’s Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by by Matthew Continetti Like a lot of people, as soon as I got my copy of Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue,” I immediately thought of the German literary critic Hans Robert Jauss. Jauss is known as the father of critical reception theory. According to Jauss, every book is read in a social context. In his view, the reader’s attitudes, beliefs, values and judgments are just as important as the (more…)

The Help (Hardcover)

The Help

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn’s new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding s (more…)

The Lost Symbol (Hardcover)

The Lost Symbol

Amazon.com Review

Let’s start with the question every Dan Brown fan wants answered: Is The Lost Symbol as good as The Da Vinci Code? Simply put, yes. Brown has mastered the art of blending nail-biting suspense with random arcana (from pop science to religion), and The Lost Symbol is an enthralling mix. And what a dazzling accomplishment that is, considering that rabid fans and skeptics alike are scrutinizing every word. The Lost Symbol begins with an ancient ritual, a shadowy e (more…)

Where the Wild Things Are [DELUXE EDITION] (Hardcover)

Where the Wild Things Are

Amazon.com Review

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it’s been too long since you’ve attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak’s color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the p (more…)

Indigo Ocean Dreams: 4 Children's Stories Designed to Decrease Stress, Anger and Anxiety while Increasing Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness

Review

I bought this CD for my 10 year old daughter who has terrible trouble getting to sleep at night. She would still be awake at midnight some nights and be very ratty in the morning due to lack of sleep. The first night I used this CD, she went to bed at 8pm and was asleep by 8.35pm. An absolute miracle for her! Woke up the next day brighter and happy –amazon

Peek-A Who? (Board book)

Peek-A Who?

Amazon.com Review

Nina Laden’s illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words “Peek a” are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow (“MOO!”), a green ghost (“BOO!”), and a mirror (you guessed it, “YOU!”). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who–or what–is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-si (more…)
